It is confirmed today that 51-year-old anime director Masaaki Yuasa’s first original feature film Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta (Lu’s Song that Announces The Break of Dawn)/Lu Over The Wall is slated for a release in Japan on May 19, 2017. The story follows the encoonter and relationship between a junior high school boy Kai (CV: Shouta Shimoda) who lives in a fishing port town and Lu (Kanon Tani), a mermaid girl comes from the sea.
The director is best known for his anime adaptation works of Tomihiko Morimi’s The Tatami Galaxy comedy novel in 2010 and Taiyo Matsumoto’s Ping Pong sports manga in 2014. He is also currently working on the anime feature film adaptation of Tomihiko Morimi’s award-winning love story novel Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome (Night is short, Walk, Girl) that will open in Japan on April 7, 2017.
36-year-old manga artist Yoko Nemu (Toriaezu Chikyuu ga Horobiru Mae ni, Sandaime Kusuriya Kyubee)
provides the original character designs, and Nobutake Ito (The Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong The Animation)
serves as the anime character designer and animation director. The screenplay is co-written by Yuasa and
Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Girls und Panzer). Yuasa’s own company Science SARU works on anime production.
The soundtrack music is composed by Takatsugu Muramatsu (Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri) and
50-year-old singer-songwriter Kazuyoshi Saito provides his 15th single song “Utautai no Ballad” released
in 1997 as the theme song for the film.
