Tachikoma Provides Friendly Customer Service at the I.G Store

As part of the ongoing “Ghost in the Shell Realize Project”, an effort to make the imaginary technologies of Masamune Shirow’s seminal cyberpunk manga and anime a reality, the I.G Store venues in Shibuya and Osaka will be hosting an unusual customer service representative in the form of a 1/2 scale Tachikoma communications robot.

The robot will be on location at the Shibuya venue from December 23, 2016 – January 15, 2017, and on location at the Osaka venue from January 19 – January 31, 2017. During these times, customers will be able to place their orders through a “Virtual Agent Tachikoma” smart phone app developed by karakuri products and KAYAC Inc.. This information will be relayed to the semi-autonomous, remote-operated Tachikoma, which will then interact with the customers.

The Tachikoma robot has dimensions of about 1500 mm x 1400 mm x 1100 mm (4.9 feet x 4.6 feet x 3.6 feet) and it weighs about 60 kilograms (132 pounds). The press release notes that the implementation of this project is experimental in nature, and the space and times for the demonstration of the Tachikoma communications robot are subject to change.
